Consumer boy - ECO Design Challenge31 December 2006
Registration for the ECO Design Challenge closes.

8 January 2007
The challenge starts, and the students begin to source the information for the ECO Calculator (Excel spreadsheet available in resources section) and then create their school 24 hour ecological and carbon footprint. This information can be collected for any day between 8 January and 1 March 2007.

Dott 07 activities and fact sheets are also supplied to assist teacher but are not compulsory. Students and teachers can then use the footprint information to assess the school’s ecological and carbon footprint and help stimulate new ideas. Ideas should be to redesign an aspect of their school that will reduce the ecological and carbon footprint of the school on the environment. Ideas will probably be related to use of transport, energy, water, food and use of waste.

This could be any aspect of the school, e.g.
  • Something inside the school
  • Something outside the school
  • A product used in the school or community
  • A service used by the school or community
  • A communication in or outside the school
  • An initiative in or outside of the school
  • Other ideas
The group must develop a design brief for the ideas they wish to submit using the Dott 07 ‘design brief’ activity as a template. A maximum of three briefs per school can be submitted.

Submissions must include:
  • Completed ECO Calculator (spreadsheet format)
  • Maximum of three design briefs for redesigning an aspect of the school
  • Output visual from the ECO Flash Calculator
Design briefs, ECO calculator and school visualisation image (from Flash ECO calculator) must be emailed to Dott 07 Nick Devitt by 5pm on 1 March 2007.

26 March 2007
Up to 50 briefs will be shortlisted and the schools invited to develop their design briefs.

April - June 2007
Where appropriate and possible designers and domain experts will be selected to visit schools and help develop the shortlisted ideas. Dott 07 cannot guarantee that every school will be visited by designers but will endeavour to match as many schools with designers as possible. Teachers and designers will have the opportunity to liaise to agree the best time and type of activity for the students and school prior to any visit.
