RSA winner Konstantinos Chalaris' work

In collaboration with Dott 07, RSA Design Directions developed two student projects as part of their student annual awards scheme. Each project deals with a specific sustainability challenge - food, and tourism - and focuses strongly on multidisciplinary team-working. The idea is for designers to work collaboratively, and for non-designer team members to learn about the design process by working with designers. This is why multi-disciplinary team entries, which demonstrate designers working with a non-designer(s), are strongly encouraged.

The projects form the first stage of a larger, two-stage competition. The first stage involved taking part in one of the two Design Directions/Dott 07 projects on offer: either Food Information System or Sustainable Tourism. These projects were judged as part of Design Directions in the usual way by a panel that included John Thackara, Dott 07's Programme Director. The winning Design Directions teams were awarded a trip to participate in Doors of Perception 9 which took place in India 1 - 5 March 2007.

The second stage, in July 2007, involved participation in an international design camp at various locations in North East England. The design teams developed their ideas, working both with local partners and with design mentors organised by Dott 07. Design camp teams produced working prototypes of their ideas and showcased the results during the Dott 07 Festival in October 2007.

In January 2007 the entries were judged and the lucky teams who won scholarships to Doors 9: Juice, in New Delhi, included:
  • Wesley Richardson and Lisa Stockton (Ravensbourne, Supermarket System)
  • Lucy Denham (Northumbria, Fenwicks)
  • Dawn Danby, Jyoti Stephens, Mary Rick (Beeline)
  • Konstantinos Chalaris (Brighton, Walking Wheel)
  • Jotis Moore (Farnham, End-of-the-Line)
  • Lorna Cochrane and Linzi Deprez (Napier, Route 75)

Doors 9: Juice focused on the unsustainable trends in food consumption, including the amount of CO2 emissions attributable to the producing, packaging and distribution of food consumed by a family of four in the Western world, which amounts to about 8 tonnes a year.
