DE07 - Publicity shots

Design Event is an annual festival in the North East providing the public with an opportunity to see cutting edge work by regional, national and international design talent. It also provides designers in the region with a platform to showcase their work and profiles the North East as a creative hub of designers and creators. 2007 is Design Event's third year and with support from Dott 07 and Culture 10 the festival grew bigger and better than ever!

Design Event also brings the chance to see behind the designs and discover the processes, concepts and ideas that have shaped the final works.

A full round up of DE07 events can be found on the DE07 flickr page.

For the first time Design Event produced a talk series, in association with NESTA, offering people the chance to get up close and personal with established and emerging talent working in design today. If you missed the talk series you can download the audio here.

DE07 took place between 11 - 28 October 2007.

One Off Factory

‘One-Off Factory’ in Sunderland brings together three exhibitions concerned with prototyping three-dimensional design. The projects address the problem of how bespoke design can enable solutions to be customised at an individual level, and offer prototypes for future R&D.
This is explored at the levels of costume, furniture, environment and identity.

Decompression by Jephson RobbOne Off Factory: Decompression Chamber
12 October - 11 November

‘Decompression Chamber’ brings together leading designers and artists who create bespoke micro-structures. Each work is a unique newly commissioned environment offering visitors a place for contemplation. Each is also a one-off spatial and material experiment ranging from the ultra-low tech and readily available to the most high-tech engineering by MacLaren. In every case, visitors are invited to enter the space – which becomes akin to a ‘temple for one’, in the words of one contributor. By enclosing or enveloping us, the environments become either protective or claustrophobic; they can offer sensations not only of intimacy but intimidation.

No Borders Campaign aims to question the legitimacy and value of established borders. The new designs promote the cohesion that exists amongst our diverse population and between our cities, countries and continents. Look out for new flags flying from flagpoles in the region.

Plastic Recycling Factory by Cohda DesignPlastic Recycling Factory
19 - 28 October

The recycling factory developed by Cohda Design is a series of industrially modified machinery that will be fed by domestic plastic packaging waste (such as bottles bags and food trays), and will then be re-formed back into useful designs almost instantly! The sustainable event will on public display for 10 days and will be used to generate a series of handmade recycled plastic seating designs, taking the form of an evolving exhibit. Early designs from the process are receiving wide acclaim and were a huge hit at New York’s furniture fair earlier this year; but this is the first opportunity to see the process behind the work.

Reluctant HeroThick as Thieves
18 - 27 October

Reluctant Hero present Thick as Thieves a graphic interpretatation of what we see as the unravelling of the icons and symbols that we grew up with. As we forge ahead into this new and unsettled world, once comforting symbols such as the Milk Man, Monarchy, Government, Post Offce etc. are being dismantled and in their place are rapacious supermarkets, corporate crookery and feral teens weaving their geometry of menace around haunted estates. Yet all is not bleak Thick as Thieves is at it’s core a celebration of the a region, a people and their resoloute strength in maintaining dignity through adversity.
